As well as his famous locomotives, Sir Nigel Gresley, Chief Mechanical Engineer of the LNER, designed a range of very useful coaching stock. Whilst retaining the more traditional concept of teak bodies, his designs were in advance of other of the period by virtue of the adoption of Pullman gangways and buckeye couplers, both of which prevent telescoping in the event of an accident. Other innovations incorporated in his design were electric cooking and pressure ventilation. Gresley coaches were a common sight throughout the former LNER system, including the Great Central route through Quainton Road. |
