Chairman's Notes - Allan Baker - Hon. Chairman
I am writing these notes immediately following the Members Meeting held on 19th September which reviewed the very difficult situation the Society is facing and the background to the declaration of staff redundancies.
Those of you who attended the meeting will have heard the stark facts presented by our Treasurer, Chris Quarmby. In his presentation Chris set out the serious shortfall of income we have been experiencing for many months.
He went on to illustrate the consequent effects of this in severely limiting the amount of money can be spent on restoration and maintenance projects on our locomotives, rolling stock and site infrastructure in general.
Faced with these hard financial facts the Executive Committee spent many hours in deliberation, only reaching the final decision that staff cuts were unavoidable with the greatest reluctance The plain fact is that the Society has been living beyond its means and in a position that in a number of ways mirrors the national situation. Our economy has to be re-balanced.
The loss of two senior members of staff at one time will require a considerable change in the way we operate with a much greater requirement for volunteer assistance at all levels and in all departments. In particular we need members who are prepared to take a role in leading others as chairmen of the committees that will be required to run our commercial, engineering and operations departments.
In the past few weeks I have been greatly heartened at the messages of support I have received from members and their offers of assistance. To them and to all members I say the Society has achieved too much over the past 41 years to see it put at risk by a short term financial crisis we can and will manage our way through.
In conclusion, I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the Executive Committee to thank both Janet and Adrian for their work for the Society and wish them well in the future.
