Book Review [Note 1]
The Observer's Directory of British Steam Locomotives, published by Frederick Warne Limited, is the latest of the Observer series and it is of special interest to Quainton members because its author is Mr H C Casserley. The book has a cloth board binding, 5½" x 7½", 240 pages and no less than 565 illustrations of locomotives, each picture supported by relevant text. The main section comprises a survey based on wheel arrangement and within each section the individual engines are described in chronological order. In the majority, the photographs are taken by the author and that fact has guaranteed Quainton Road appearing several times in the book. There is a neat little view of Sydenham, our Aveling and Porter geared locomotive, a shot of 0314 standing in the Brill platform and, in a similar position, on another page is 4-4-0T, London Transport 23, on a goods train for the branch. For the benefit of younger readers, emphasis has been placed on the examples of locomotives which have been preserved and can still be sought by the ardent Observer. For older enthusiasts, the book is a useful outline history of the development of the steam locomotive in this country, including Eire. At £8.95, the Directory is a handy pocket-size companion well worth considering when your birthday is due!
