Letters to the Editor
Tim Stevens visited after a long absence and was so impressed with the facilities at the Centre that he rejoined the Society there and then. Why not renew your acquaintance with us? Dear Jeff, QRS 40th Anniversary I was one of the original members of the Signals & Telegraph Department from the first open day in 1969 through to the late 1970's when I moved to "pastures new". I returned to the Centre last year for the Napier weekend and was so impressed with what I saw that I rejoined the Society on the spot! QRS members can be justly proud of the many achievements and milestones over the past 40 years, but for me the "jewel in the crown" is the superbly restored Rewley Road building, a facility that the visitors love, and which I feel has considerable untapped commercial potential. Another great asset is the well-presented museum, which gives visitors an insight into the social history of railways; something they don't get from merely riding behind a steam engine. Currently, there's much talk of a connection to the national network. But I believe we would better spend the time, effort and finances on restoring, displaying and demonstrating our large and varied collection. For example, the imposing signal box is a sadly underused asset, which could be restored partly for operational signalling and party as a signalling demonstration and display. Let's concentrate on what's on site before venturing outside. We have come a long way since 1969. With ongoing support from members and visitors, I'm sure the BRC will continue to progress and grow during the next 40 years. Yours sincerely, Tim Stevens. Dear Jeff, I took these shots of the magnificently restored coaches (See rear cover for picture of vintage rake) when I visited the Centre. They are a credit to the site and all concerned in the restoration, you must admit they look great behind Gibraltar. My copy of Quainton News arrived today and I am pleased to catch up with the Napier event story, especially as I enjoyed the event greatly. I do have great hopes for the mainline connection, but am concerned about the cost. I hope people respond, as I will, with a donation or two. Best regards, Michael Hunt |
