Easter 1973 and the Cover Photograph

The weather was very bad and the attendance figures were not as good as last year, which isn't surprising. We had about 8000 visitors who braved the elements and the one piece of good fortune was that we had arranged the DMU service from Aylesbury for the Bank Holiday Monday which turned out to be reasonable until the late afternoon. It is interesting to learn that 840 passengers came by our special train service and that, throughout the three Open Days we gave 3000 visitors the opportunity of travelling behind a steam locomotive. Our cover picture shows the GW Pannier tank, 7715, and the new favourite, Coventry No.1, with full steam up for the business offered on Easter Sunday. The response by members to volunteer to help was very good except for the job as car park attendant and our member on this duty was nearly inundated by the mass arrival of cars on Easter Monday. The White Elephant stall was the best ever and its proceeds were nearly £40, thanks again to Mr. and Mrs. Brocklehurst and to members for their gifts. No. 3, pictured above also had a day of activity on trains for our visitors on the Monday. |
