The job of renovating the station building has proved to be far more time-consuming than was originally envisaged, but all the structural work has now been completed. In addition to the work detailed in the last 'News', the doorway knocked through from the booking hall to the station master's office some years ago has been blocked up again. In the ladies loo new wooden window surrounds have been fitted, along with new door frame. The new drainage arrangements have been installed and two new cubicle areas formed, while the ceiling has been replaced and all walls replastered. The floor is to be tiled before new partitioning and sanitary ware is installed. The booking office partition wall has been rebuilt, the ceiling repaired and all walls replastered. Again, window surrounds have been replaced. A new boiler has been installed in the station master's office to supply hot water to both toilets. Outside, platform canopy repainting is nearly complete and much has been done on the forecourt, including the construction of a new pathway down to the car park. The Midland Railway road crane has been moved across from the down yard to the front of the station and will be joined by the Lancashire & Yorkshire horse-drawn dray, on which work has now started. |
