In Memoriam John Robert Fairman 1920 - 1992
John Fairman, who died on 17 January from lung cancer, will be greatly missed by many people after his extremely full and active life, this reflected in the attendance of hundreds of mourners at the funeral in Chandlers Ford. Although John's family connections with railways extend to three generations, on leaving school he entered the gas industry, holding a number of senior posts in the Southern Area. His enthusiasm for all aspects of the railway scene can however be traced back to school days. With the decline in the railways during the 1960s, John extended his interest into the growing preservation field and, fortunately for the Society, he became editor of Quainton News from No 7 (1971) to No 61 (1986), thus holding the editorship for the longest period in the 30 year history of LPRS/QRS (1962-1992). A booklet was also produced by him on the history of the Beattie tank. For his services to the Society over these years John was elected to Honorary Life Membership. The condolences of the Society are extended to Norah and family. The passing of John Fairman has left a great void which for many will never be filled. |
