In his report to this issue, Director of Marketing Phil Marsh opines that restoration work should not proceed on large Open Days. Here we have what is surely the beginning of a lively debate on an important matter of principle. Let me play Devil's Advocate. It could be argued on one hand that the public likes to see restoration in progress; the latter provides entertainment and instruction; it prompts discussion between visitors and restorers; it conveys a 'busy' impression of the Centre. But - does the guy clad in ear muffs and operating an angle grinder interest them? Almost certainly not. Then, there are serious matters of public safety to consider. However, were restoration activities to be prohibited on certain days would this not stir up resentment amongst members who give a lot of valuable time for a specific aspect of the hobby that prompted them to join QRS in the first place? These members might vote with their feet instead of helping with e.g. gate duty, and might well remind Phil of the old maxim about 'flogging a willing horse.' These are powerful arguments both for and against Phil's stance. What is your opinion? Perhaps this is a matter for urgent debate by the Executive (our policy makers)? The Editors await your opinions for publication in Quainton News. |
