Post bag - Letters to the Editors
(Contributors to Postbag are reminded that the Editors reserve the right to edit letters: wordy texts will be shortened) Memories of Quainton Road Dear Sir, My grandfather Will' Cross was Stationmaster at Quainton Road - for how long I am not sure but certainly in 1934 (when I lived with my grandparents and went to the village school) and certainly for a good while after that. I seem to remember that he moved to Aylesbury not long before the outbreak of the Second World War. Naturally my memories of Quainton - being only 4 at the time - are not that lucid. But, as I stood again on that station platform the years fall away. I must own to a moistness in the eyes and a lump in the throat. There was the door to Grandad's office; I remembered coming out of there laden with penny bars of Cadbury's chocolate to re-fill the red machine that stood just outside. All in all, that holiday was pure nostalgia. Later that week I got hold of a book about the Tram, and there was Great Uncle - Harry Cross - who I believe went to Canada. How I smiled at the tales of his visit to the Railway Arms and his demolishing the engine shed and crossing gates. I am certainly looking forward to visiting Quainton Road again - and having more time as last time I could only spare an hour or two. Yours sincerely, |
