What Does the Trackside Infrastructure Maintenance Team Do? - By the Per-Way Team
|
Most of the work the team undertakes is not seen by the public or a portion of the societies membership. Its work provides the means of allowing the locomotives and other rolling stock to move around the site without the aid of a crane. Keeping the rails a set distance apart and to a reasonable geometry is a continuous process. The up-side demonstration line is gradually taking shape. The intention is to have at least nine inches of ballast under every sleeper and shoulders of at least twelve inches width throughout. On completion it is intended to hire in a tamping machine to put on a 'fine design top line' finish. Also included in this play is a one metre wide walkway from the yard gate to the London end stop blocks for use by the traincrews. The down-side has enabling works taking place for drainage improvement. The cost of this is nil in terms of finance but high in muscle. The team also undertakes to perform hedge, fence and ditching work when required. Competition: Identify 20 items of work that has been carried out by the team in the last six months. List them on a postcard and hand to any member of the team. Prize: A weekend of intensive training in perway engineering ..... |
