A Few Words of Introduction From The New Editor - Phil Marsh
|
WELCOME. To many of you, the fact that I am the Editor of the Quainton News will be a surprise. I am very pleased to be in the hot seat for several reasons. There are two main ones. Firstly I want to build on the hard work that David Stribley and Alan Sturrock have done in the past. I can now claim to be Poacher turned Gamekeeper insofar as I have been pestering editors of Daily and Weekly newspapers as well as those of the Railway press for about four years to promote Quainton. Secondly, when I started to be an active volunteer of Quainton five or six years ago, I was advised by Bruce Murray not to do as a volunteer what I did at work. Some of you will know that my hobby has since become my work. The thrill of being on the main line with a steam locomotive is not to be missed. If I had not been an active volunteer here at Quainton, then I would not be able to enjoy this thrill. I have in a way, a lot to thank Quainton for. I will try to repay that debt in my new role. I have known abject failure and superb successes in pestering the Media to cover our activities. If you, the member, think that the Quainton News is a worthwhile and informative read I for one will be delighted. I hope to be able to demonstrate that for once, I have adopted a neutral stance as an editor should do. This edition sees contribution from Melvyn Chamberlain who operates Days Out Ltd; who asked me to be able to introduce him to you all, who wishes to use Quainton as their Southern Operating Base with such locomotives as Sir Nigel Gresley, The Duke of Gloucester and last but by no means least, Black 5 George Stephenson which has operated over Copy Pit and into and out of St Pancras in the last few months. I have been privileged to travel on some of his trains and look forward to seeing him at Quainton. The other guest article is by Chris Milner, Assistant Editor of the Railway Magazine, who has been a great influence and help to me, who incidentally put Melvyn Chamberlain in touch with me at work. The rest as they say, is history. Believe me, there are some amazing trains in the pipeline as Chris has hinted in his article. You will need to read Railway Magazine to find out about them though! In future editions of the News, I hope to include guest articles from other people or organisations that come into contact with us at Quainton. I need to have feedback about the Quainton News if the editorial team's efforts are to be worthwhile. It is your Society which you have paid money to join and hopefully are able to support in other than financial ways. Therefore you have a real right to criticise and hopefully compliment what is going on around the Railway Centre. All contributions are very welcome, both words (letters, reports and articles), and pictures (please caption your photographs and let me know how many words you have penned in your offerings because I have had to count about 20,000 words for this edition). The editorial team is Allan Baker, Alan Sturrock, Janice Uphill and myself. It is not Phil Marsh's magazine - it is your magazine, so the editorial team look forward to receiving your contributions in the Admin Coach at the centre. Please note that the deadline for the next News From Quainton is June 20th. Thank you. Enjoy the magazine. |
