Working Week - Tony Lyster
|
This years working week, the annual opportunity to clear up all the mess we have created in the previous year, went with some marvellous weather. We were also able to start and finish some additional projects. The work list was indeed prodigious and the results are long lasting. The path from the car park under the bridge has been levelled and rolled with umpteen dumper loads of ash from the up yard, hedges that have been allowed to grow rampant over the years have been cleared or reduced such as beside VAMES and in the car park field. This latter has opened up a new vista of our road bridge from the middle of the field. The approach beside Railtrack's line has been cleared of scrub and the fence on platform 2 has been extended to the bridge in the same style. A disabled ramp has been installed to the terrapin shop and a porch is being constructed to highlight this and to draw attention to the existence of the shop. Joan has added a new shop to her chain by taking over the old 6024 sales coach body opposite refreshments. She has worked long and hard with her assistants to improve the appearance and layout which will help with our much needed sales. |

Peter Hoskings and his team have redesigned the narrow platform exit gate beside the gents loo to a much greater width. It now seems so obvious, why didn't we do this before? And the range of platform lighting has been increased with more victorian style lampposts. Throughout the week the tongue in cheek daily newspaper, Ready By Easter, kept everyone up to date with the previous day's events though many of the tales were a bit far fetched. One that sticks in the mind was the 'discovery' of the Brill Railway Canal, an erstwhile non starter, whilst digging out an old drain alongside the restoration shed. This drain now runs (it didn't before) to the gate and will, eventually, take the outfall from the down yard once the new track drains are in. The driveway into the down yard has been landscaped level with the tons of stone but PLEASE no speeding down here. The other constant in the week was the provision of a large, hot midday meal and two tea breaks for a very modest outlay, by Michael Hazell. The high point of the week was 26 for lunch when 21 had booked! A couple of new faces also appeared and were quickly given a job to do! It looks as if Bob Swift is now hooked for good. A lot of things got painted around the general station area such as the telephone box, station furniture and a new pair of gates that have been built and installed outside the ladies loo. The old ones has got to be the point of 'open them once more and put them on the fire'. In all it was a very successful week with quite a few members staying overnight and the rain held off until the second Sunday, too. |
